Organised by CESHET – the Centre for Heritage and Territorial Studies at the European University of Rome – this event stems from the need to consider monastic sites in relation to their surrounding territory. These complexes are, in fact, key nodes within broader historical systems, in which settlements, road networks, landscapes, economic practices and forms of spatial organisation are intertwined. CeSHeT’s research projects on the Abbey of San Sebastiano in Alatri will be presented; this was the first monastic settlement founded by Saint Benedict, who resided there with a number of disciples in 528 and where he drew up the Benedictine Rule.
The round-table discussion aims to explore models and methods through which scientific knowledge of monastic sites can engage with conservation efforts and with spatial planning that takes account of the historical depth of these places.
